Love Shouldn’t Feel This Lonely

When You’re Together But Emotionally Miles Apart

By: Joy E. Davis, LCSW

You share a bed, a home, maybe even a laugh here and there. But something is missing. You feel more like roommates than partners. And the loneliness you feel sitting next to them is worse than being alone.

Emotional disconnection doesn’t always look like screaming matches. Sometimes it’s silence. It’s the slow fade of “I don’t bother sharing anymore because it won’t matter.” It’s scrolling on your phone in bed because real conversation feels too risky.

This kind of distance rarely happens overnight. It builds through hundreds of small missed moments—bids for connection that went unanswered. A sigh that was ignored. A story that got interrupted. Over time, you stop reaching.

What to Do Right Now

Tonight, put the phone down for ten minutes and ask your partner one real question: “What’s been weighing on you lately?” Then just listen. No fixing. No defending. Just presence.

If the distance feels too big to bridge alone, couples therapy can help you reconnect.
